India's factory output expands at 7.5 percent in January

Manufacturing capital consumer goods push IIP growth to 7.5% retail inflation falls to 4.4

January saw annual consumer inflation of 5.1%, off the December figure of 5.2%, which was the highest rate in 17 months. Capital goods output grew by 14.6 per cent in January as against a contraction of 0.6 per cent in the same period past year.

India's factory production grew in January to 7.5% over the same month previous year, and marginally over the 7.1% recorded in December 2017, official data showed on Monday.

Retail inflation fell to a 4-month low of 4.44 percent in February on cheaper food articles and lower cost for fuel, government data showed on Monday.

A lower inflation is considered to be an ideal situation for central bank to slash prices to aid industrial and commercial activity. Inflation rate for vegetables was 17.57 per cent in February down from 26.97 per cent in January, while that for fruits was 4.80 per cent as against 6.24 per cent a month ago.

The cumulative Index of Industrial Production (IIP) growth for the April-January period of the current fiscal over the corresponding period of the previous year stood at 4.1 per cent, the CSO said.

"The downward move in inflation is on the back of seasonal food price reduction".

Meanwhile, the Index of Industrial Production rose 7.5 per cent in January, led by robust expansion in the manufacturing sector.

Experts suggest the consistent growth in the industrial production could boost the overall economic growth in the fourth quarter.

"When it comes to consumer inflation, 4.4% in February may be lower than January, the undercurrent remains biased on the upside, making RBI disinclined towards any rate cut, though the industry would like it to happen", it said in a statement.

Manufacturing sector grew by 8.7 per cent during January compared with 2.5 per cent a year ago.

Consumer non-durables, which are mainly fast moving consumer goods, too showed an increase of 10.5 per cent against a growth of 9.6 per cent. Consumer durables recorded a growth of 8 per cent against a contraction of 2 per cent a year ago. This looks like an early sign of industrial revival.

The mining sector, however, was a laggard at 0.1% growth compared to 8.6% a year ago.

As per use-based classification, the growth rates in January 2018 over January 2017 are 5.8% in primary goods, 4.9% in intermediate goods and 6.8% in Infrastructure/ Construction Goods. What is encouraging is that the capital goods sector has posted robust growth during the month backed by new orders and improved demand.
