Kremlin rejects USA charge Russian Federation in breach of arms control treaties

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said during a press conference the day the charges were announced that the Department of Justice had begun the process of negotiating with Russian Federation to have the defendants extradited to the USA to face trial.

The spat came as relations between the powers lie frozen at levels not seen since the Cold War over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria and accusations that Moscow interfered in the US presidential election in 2016. "I want to note that we managed to provide an effective and efficient counter-intelligence cover for these large-scale projects", Putin said, speaking at the FSB board.

The idea rose to new heights in the 1980s with President Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, or Star Wars, which envisioned a shield guarding the United States from Soviet nuclear missiles like "a roof protects a family from rain".

Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked the Federal Security Bureau (FSB) for securing the secrecy of developing new types of weapons. The American military already knew about the weapons Putin referenced and stands ready to defend the United States, she said.

When Kelly pressed him about the different facets of Russia's meddling and the recent indictment of over a dozen Russian nationals and three Russian entities, Putin said the request had to move through "official channels" and not through the press or "yelling and hollering" in Congress.

He added that the United States does not have a functioning ballistic missile shield and is unlikely to have one at any point during Putin's lifetime, "if ever". Still, "it's not important if Putin was bluffing", said Golts.

White didn't say whether Russian and Chinese threats would be mentioned in the new policy.

The U.S. military now has 44 interceptors in Alaska and California that can shoot missiles out of silos, with plans to increase the number to 64 by about 2023 and possibly add a third site in the eastern part of the United States.

But Putin says USA authorities need to "provide some materials, specifics and data".

In particular, the Russian government is more willing to use "cyber proxies" like hackers and criminal groups that operate outside of the government, said Paulo Shakarian, the CEO of the cybersecurity threat intelligence firm CYR3CON.
