'Terrific relationship': Trump and Turnbull meet on trade, military

Melania Trump looks golden in military style coat outside the White House

Mr Turnbull emphasised the "hundred years of mateship" between Australia and the USA since soldiers from both countries fought together on the western front in France in 1918.

But it seems all was forgotten on Friday afternoon local time when the two leaders announced the USA would be naming one of its combat ships the USS Canberra after Australia's capital.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull met with the president Friday, where they discussed trade and security ahead of a joint press briefing. And he's offering an intriguing carrot: An offer to invest some of Australia's public pension assets in US infrastructure.

President Trump welcomed Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to the White House Friday in an attempt to rebuild a sometimes-strained relationship with a crucial Pacific ally.

"We have a big meeting set up in a little while and we have a luncheon set up also and we have all of our representatives surrounding us and a lot of good things will come out of this visit".

"We will hopefully follow in your footsteps", Trump, talking about immigration policies, said.

It was not always so.

Trump says the ship will be named the USS Canberra, after Australia's capital.

Mr Trump's hosting of Mr Turnbull at the White House comes just days after 17 people were killed in a school shooting in Florida.

Australia has fought alongside the United States in every modern war, including Vietnam, and is a key part of the Five Eyes intelligence sharing network.

"Infrastructure in a growing and secure economy like the United States is often attractive for those funds", said Andrew Shearer, senior adviser on Asia Pacific Security at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Turnbull, a former Goldman Sachs banker, thanked Trump and Melania for their "hospitality and friendship".

Mr Turnbull said it was the 100th anniversary of the World War I battle for Hamel in France where Australian and USA forces first fought together.

"We have been fighting side-by-side in freedom's cause ever since", he said. "100 more to come".

That military and Hollywood-tinged pow-wow was created to appeal to America's showbiz-inclined president.

"We're working on a trade deal, we are working on military and protection", Mr Trump said.

Turnbull's entourage, however, had one eye on events at home.

The Prime Minister is commemorating a century of "mateship" with the US.
