Could a North Korean athlete defect to South Korea during the Olympics?

President Moon Jae-in is rarely shown in Pyongyang's official mediaMore

Japanese editorials sounded a similar warning, saying dialogue would be meaningless unless it led to denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

The games have not reduced the USA -led global pressure on North Korea to give up its nuclear and long-range missile program that is threatening America and the world.

"Our resolve to stand with you is unshakable", Pence said.

Pence did say, however, that Moon shared with him details of his meeting with North Korean leaders, without elaborating.

"There was no problem with their costumes but they entered the media seats with a regular ticket", they said.

Aides acknowledged that the hard-nosed message is an unusual one for the affable Pence, but said the circumstances warrant the tone.

South Korea's defence ministry and cybersecurity experts are included in the task force investigating Friday's attack, but the possible culprit is being kept under wraps. Pence was seated in a box with a number of South Korea's leaders.

The invitation puts Mr Moon in a hard position as he had promised to engage with the North, but his USA ally is cautious of Seoul falling for North Korea's charm offensive. "She is the person he trusts more than anyone else in the regime", said Ken Gause, North Korean leadership expert.

Pence also briefly attended an Olympic reception on Thursday, and shook hands with all heads of state besides North Korea's ceremonial head of state, Kim Yong Nam.

The younger Kim's trip to the South marks the first time that a member of the North's ruling dynasty has visited since the Korean War, which ended in an armistice in 1953. Those are the flags of united Korea that athletes from North Korea and South Korea marched under during Friday's Opening Ceremony.

Pence has meant to use his trip to the Olympics to caution the South against "falling for" the North's overtures, which in the past have been used as stall tactics to allow for continued development of its nuclear program.

"As the last torchbearer I was able to participate in the ceremony and as an athlete myself it was great honour for me", she told a news conference on Saturday.

Although they received a rapturous welcome at the Kwandong Hockey Centre, including from the North Korean cheerleaders, the team - who are the eighth seeds in the competition - found it tough on the ice.

The U.S. has given mixed signals about its willingness to talk.

But Pence was acutely aware that by rebuffing a potential opening with Pyongyang, he was also rebuffing Moon, thereby risking widening the rift in the U.S.

Pence is leading the USA delegation to the opening ceremonies, where he has worked to pour cold water on warming ties between the two Koreas.

The North's presence has dominated the headlines in the early days of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

"The Ivanka Trump of North Korea".

He also ratcheted up his rhetoric on the North's human-rights abuses in a speech to USA service members at Yokota Air Base in Japan.

Moon recalled his past visit to the North's Diamond Mountain resort, where he and his mother met his North Korean aunt during a temporary reunion of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

As part of his push against North Korean propaganda, Pence attended the short track speed skating with Fred Warmbier, the father of an American student who died past year after being imprisoned in North Korea for 17 months.
