Trump asks Pentagon to hold a military parade in DC

"We've been putting together some options", Defence Secretary James Mattis told reporters during a White House press briefing.

John Hoellwarth, communications director for American Veterans, a service organization, told The Washington Post that a parade "lionizing the military" could address the military's existing recruitment problems.

Democratic Congressman Keith Ellison described Trump's order as "the Exalted Leader's latest idiot [and authoritarian] idea".

The allegations came via on-the-record interviews the women gave to The Daily Mail and to The Intercept, which published photographs of Colbie Holderness, now 37, with a black eye she said Porter gave her during a vacation in the mid-2000s.

Congressional Democrats on Wednesday largely opposed President Donald Trump's request to hold a military-style parade, while Republicans appeared mixed on the idea.

"Safe bet that Donald Trump - in addition to never having served himself, never having had a father or grandfather who served, and never having sons who served - has also never attended a line-of-duty military funeral, or even visited the front as President". Yes, and the United States generally does not, with the exception of welcome-home festivities at the end of wars.

Additionally, the optics of paying millions of dollars - a 1991 parade honoring the end of the Gulf War cost an estimated $8 million - won't play well considering lawmakers are again closing in on a possible government shutdown. Some point out that it's a waste of taxpayers' money and that it's reminiscent of a dictatorship.

Trump has frequently spoken of his longtime support for veterans - he praised them twice in the past week in his Black History Month proclamation and in his Super Bowl statement. "We still have wars going on that we need to fight". "We don't have to show off to make a point".

The Louisiana Republican joins a growing number of lawmakers who have scoffed at Trump's plan to throw a parade honoring the US military, which he has instructed the Pentagon to begin planning.

When pressed by a reporter on whether that was the best way to show appreciation for the troops, Ms Sanders said the White House has not made a final decision and that they are "exploring different ways that he could highlight and show the pride we have in the military".

Trump already raised fears over growing authoritarianism earlier this week after calling Democrats who didn't applaud his State of the Union address "un-American" and "treasonous". "We'll send them up to the White House for decision". "But the civilian sector of the country, the Americans who remember Vietnam and the divisions of that era (wanted one)", a CBS correspondent who reported the event told the anchor Bob Scheiffer.
