Shani Davis upset he lost flag bearing honor in coin toss

Shani Davis is upset to have missed out on carrying the United States flag at the opening ceremony to the 2018 Winter Olympics after losing a coin toss. John Locher AP

He was the first black athlete to win individual Winters gold in 2006. "I can't wait to share it with them all!"

She arrived at her first Olympics in sixth place in the World Cup slalom standings, which Shiffrin leads.

He retained that four years later before winning 1500m silver in both Turin and Vancouver. The march of athletes from the world's many nations saw them girded against a frigid Korean night with temperatures that dipped below freezing and biting winds. After listing several of his accomplishments, which he believes, should have made him the flag-bearer.

A statement read: "Shani won't march in the parade. He is fully focused on his first race and is concentrating on that".

And Davis was definitely not happy about it, venting in a tweet that the coin toss was "dishonorably" done.

"Hopefully, it means [the sport] gets a little more attention and we get some funding and spread the numbers and get a lot more kids involved going forward", Hamlin said at the time.

If he is, this might be the first racially-motivated coin toss in the history of the Olympics.

For her part, Hamlin said she was excited about the prospect of carrying the flag.

Earlier this week, U.S. Luger Erin Hamlin - who is white - was chosen to carry the flag from among a group of U.S athletes.

In his tweet, Davis added the hashtag "BlackHistoryMonth2018", suggesting racial bias was involved.

Hamlin's selection brought warm notice across social media, including from television outlets, elected officials, and the U.S. Olympic team.

One of two openly gay U.S. athletes at the Pyeongchang Games, Rippon criticized the White House last month for choosing Pence to lead its official delegation for Friday's opening ceremony.

Voting from one United States representative from each of the eight winter sports federations was deadlocked 4-4 between Hamlin - the first USA luge singles medalist - and Davis.

"I decided then psychologically, because it was my last Games, I needed to go".

"That's the main goal, but at this point, I don't feel like I have anything to prove".

Perhaps even more puzzling is why Davis wasn't the overwhelming choice among his fellow USA athletes. It's not so glamorous.
