Cavs deal Thomas for Clarkson, Nance

Associated Press

The Boston Celtics put themselves in an awkward position this summer - by scheduling Paul Pierce's jersey retirement against the Cleveland Cavaliers, they opened themselves up to the possibility that it would double as Isaiah Thomas' first game back in Boston. After a hip injury cost him the first half of this season, Thomas is now finishing out the campaign in Los Angeles.

Moments after reportedly being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, Channing Frye shared a final farewell with Cleveland Cavaliers fans - as only he can.

Thomas missed the first half of the season with a hip injury he suffered while with the Boston Celtics past year, and he has struggled to fit in with the team on the court since his debut.

Guard Jordan Clarkson (6) and forward Larry Nance Jr. Because of that, his pending free agency, and perceived trade value, Cleveland was looking to deal him.

Nance, 25, established himself as a solid young piece for the Lakers in recent seasons, averaging 8.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this year.

The key to standing pat has been the development Clarkson and Randle have shown this season. He averaged just 14.7 points in those games.

Isaiah Thomas, who was acquired during the offseason from the Celtics in exchange for Kyrie Irving, was the first to go Thursday morning.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst notes that with Cleveland taking on long-term money and helping clear cap space, they are wagering that LeBron James decides to stay with the team when he opts out of his contract and becomes a free agent this off-season.

"Speculating or being upset about it before it happens does you, does the organization, does anybody no good", he said Wednesday. The trade I believe complicates matters between Lonzo Ball and Thomas though. "I mean I started out here with [Robert] Sacre and Kobe [Bryant]".

The Cavaliers blew up their roster in an attempt to salvage their season ahead of Thursday's 2 p.m. National Basketball Association trade deadline.

After three straight Finals appearances and a title in 2016, the Cavs are now third in the East.
