Filipina caretaker missing after Taiwan quake - MECO

A police officer stands guard outside a damaged building after an earthquake hit Hualien Taiwan

Residents of Guangdong and Fujian experienced tremors last night from a magnitude 6.4 quake that shook Taiwan at around 11.50pm (CST) yesterday, according to a WeChat post by the Shenzhen Evening News.

A magnitude 6.4 quake struck near the coastal city of Hualien in Taiwan late on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, killing at least two people and causing several buildings to collapse. We get this sort of thing all the time and it's really nothing.

A 5.7-magnitude tremor was felt late on Wednesday, in the same area where the 6.4-magnitude quake struck.

"It's still in the process of tilting, so it would be unsafe to go in there", Chen said.

The quake caused buildings to crumble in the Taiwanese city of Halien, trapping people inside.

"Since the aftershocks are frequent, we urge all our compatriots.to remain vigilant and always pay attention to the correct message from the government", President Tsai said in a Facebook post. At least 260 people were reported injured and more than 80 are missing.

Other buildings slanted at alarming degrees and rescuers used ladders, ropes and cranes to move residents to safety. "The government will work with everyone to guard their homeland".

Laura Lo, a worker at the 7-Eleven convenience store across the street from the Marshal Hotel, said the first and second floors of the hotel appeared to be severely damaged and police officers were conducting rescue operations there.

The highway from Suao to Hualien was temporarily closed.

The official news agency said all but two of the 145 people who could not be reached might be in the Yunmen Cuiti building, a 12-story apartment building, though it said it did not immediately have an estimate of how many were trapped.

Taiwanese media reported that the Beautiful Life Hotel also was tilting.

Hualien is a popular tourist destination on Taiwan's eastern coast and home to about 100,000 people. The pattern of seismic activity that followed was stronger than anything that had previously been recorded in the area, Chen Kuo-chang, the acting director of the Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center, told the Central News Agency.

In fact, a 6.1 magnitude quake hit roughly the same region just northeast of the island on Sunday, and more than a dozen tremors cresting a magnitude of 4.5 have shaken the city since Tuesday's natural disaster. Five guests of the hotel were found dead earlier.
