Volkswagen Denies Involvement in Animal Cruelty in Monkey Experiment

Volkswagen alleged to have rigged experiment with monkeys to show safe level of emissions

"The minister has no understanding for such tests, which damage animals and humans and that do not serve science but merely PR aims", Mr Strater said.

"On behalf of the Supervisory Board I distance myself with total determination of this type of practice", said Pötsch from the headquarters of Volkswagen in Wolfsburg and considered that these experiments "are not in any way understandable".

German newspaper Stuttgarter Zeitung was the first to report on Monday the human trial at the University of Aachen, citing annual reports from the European Research Group on Environment and Health in the Transport Sector, or EUGT, which closed past year.

Stuttgarter Zeitung said around 25 healthy young people inhaled nitrogen dioxide in varying doses over a period of hours at an institute belonging to Aachen University in Germany.

The research group closed quietly past year but a report by the New York Times published on January 25 suggested that monkeys had inhaled diesel exhaust fumes as part of the research.

Barbara Hendricks, the German environment minister, said what was known about the tests so far was "vile".

"That a whole branch of industry has apparently tried to discard scientific facts with such brazen and dubious methods makes the entire thing even more horrific". That, they say, was done by a research advisory board made up of scientists.

The test-carried out at the infamous Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2014-was "deliberately manipulated" so that the Beetle would "produce artificially low emissions".

"We believe the animal tests in this study were unnecessary and repulsive", Daimler said in a statement.

The research was commissioned by the European Scientific Study Group for the Environment, Health and Transport Sector, which officially ceased operations a year ago amid controversy over its work.

The New York Times on Friday said the scientific study involving monkeys was conducted in 2014.

The Beetle being used was equipped with VW's now notorious emissions testing recognition software, which recognised when a vehicle was being subjected to a laboratory or open-road test cycle, cutting engine performance and emissions dramatically. VW supervisory board Hans Dieter Pötsch said that "whoever is responsible for this will of course take the consequences".

German vehicle manufacturers have been testing the impact of diesel fumes on monkeys by getting them to inhale them in lab conditions.

Neither the monkey test nor the Aachen test revealed anything of use to the companies involved, with the monkey test being so pointless no report or conclusion was ever released.

The three companies involved in the experiment have been quick to condemn it.

The German government also responded to the allegations on Monday. "We want to absolutely rule out testing on animals for the future so that this doesn't happen again", Bild quoted Steg as saying.

BMW said it had taken no part in the study's design and methods, but added - according to Bloomberg - that the assessment of the trial at Aachen University before an independent body with appropriate expertise (such as the ethics commission) should be taken into account.

No findings of the research were published and separate reports suggest the study was not concluded due to the possibility that the defeat device had compromised the legitimacy of the research.
