Turkey 'concerned' about clashes in Yemen's Aden

Saudi Coalition Under Pressure as Yemeni Allies Turn on Each Other

Aden has served as the temporary seat of the Saudi-backed government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi since Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital Sanaa, in 2014.

They stopped outside the al-Maasheeq palace, where Prime Minister Ahmed bin Daghr's cabinet is based, they said.

After two days of what witnesses and local news reports called fierce shelling and shooting, Mr. Hadi's forces in Aden crumbled on Tuesday, and the separatists seized the area around the presidential palace where his prime minister and other officials had been staying.

The running battles have opened a new chapter of upheaval in Yemen, after nearly three years of war between a Saudi-led military coalition and.

It has also exposed deep cracks within the Saudi-led coalition, which has been fighting Yemen's Houthi rebels on behalf of Hadi's government since March 2015.

The infighting has killed at least 36 people and injured 185 more, according to the Red Cross.

Meanwhile, the deadline expired on Sunday.

The Interior Ministry sent an urgent appeal to the Saudi-led coalition, asking for its intervention to stop attacks by the STC forces.

Although the internationally-recognized government established itself in Aden, President Hadi lives in exile in Saudi Arabia.

Tensions boiled over into armed clashes between the separatists and pro-government forces on Sunday, fuelling chaos in the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country where a civil war has already left thousands dead and millions on the brink of starvation.

By early evening, separatists took control of two roads leading to the presidential palace where several members of the government were staying, security sources said.

Yemen was unified militarily in 1990 after a protracted war, but an active secessionist movement remained in and around Aden ever since, and they appear to have finally found an opening to reassert themselves.

Al Jazeera described the separatist group efforts as a "coup".

The coalition also imposed air and sea blockade to prevent weapons from reaching Houthis, who are in control of most of the northern Yemeni provinces, including the capital Sanna.
