Trump Touts 'America First' to Skeptical Davos Elite

As world leaders gather in Davos this week, there is no doubt that the overpowering presence of US President Donald Trump has preceded his actual arrival.

Trump will host European executives on Thursday night to argue that the U.S.is a better place for businesses as a result of the tax overhaul and deregulation, his National Economic Council director, Gary Cohn, said Tuesday at a briefing.

"So while Trump undoubtedly intends to trumpet US economic progress, many Davos participants will question his racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic rhetoric and policies".

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the U.S is "not concerned" about the value of the dollar in the short-term.

"Obviously, a weaker dollar is good for us as it relates to trade and opportunities", Mnuchin told reporters at Davos. We're part of it, and we're part of a world economy.

But many observers and analysts see an irreconcilable conflict of economic philosophies.

President Donald Trump has arrived in Switzerland to tout his "America First" policies at the World Economic Forum.

The commander-in-chief arrived in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, where he has pledged to preach his "America First" message to the global elite. He said he would pursue individual deals with the other countries.

Presidential scholar Joshua Sandman of the University of New Haven likens Trump's visit to the biblical story of Daniel in the Lion's Den.

Asked about negotiations between the United States, Canada and Mexico to rework the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Ross said it was more important to get a "proper deal" than a quick agreement.

Trump said before leaving Washington that his goal at the World Economic Forum in this Alpine resort is "to tell the world how great America is and is doing". "It's been great to see you", she said, "as you said, we had a great discussion today".

"We want free and fair and reciprocal trade".

Jokes aside, the attendees at Davos are genuinely curious about what Trump might say.

"Trump at Davos would be greeted about the same way an appearance by [disgraced Hollywood producer] Harvey Weinstein would go off at the Oscars", Whalen said.

He has meetings with British Prime Minister Theresa May and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, current chairman of the African Union, and Swiss President Alain Berset on Friday.

Reports of tension between the White House and Downing Street grew still further after Mr Trump pulled out of opening the new US Embassy in London.

Davos is "not exactly a sympathetic audience" for Trump, according to William Allen Reinsch of the Center for worldwide and Security Studies.

The prime minister is also part of a panel discussion with Nobel Peace Prize victor Malala Yousafzai about the education and empowerment of girls.

Trump, who has called an agreement to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict the "ultimate deal", said Thursday that he had taken Jerusalem- one of the thorniest issues - "off the table", although US officials have stressed repeatedly that the decision has no impact on negotiations over the borders or sovereignty of the holy city.

While Ireland comes 8th out of 30 countries.

The first American president to visit Davos since Bill Clinton in 2000 will address delegates in a much-anticipated speech Friday, and he is expected to stick to his America First rhetoric. May will describe AI as "one of the greatest tests of leadership for our time".

In between the ear-bashing over social media and encryption, it is believed that May will find a few words to praise technology companies for "some progress" in developing safe AI, she will also tell companies that they need to use it to battle crime and terrorism.
