Watch How Manchester United Confirmed The Signing Of Alexis Sanchez

Manchester United have signed Chile forward Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in a deal that sees midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to the London club, the Premier League clubs said on Monday.

British media reported that Sanchez, who will wear United's iconic No. 7 shirt, has joined the club on a 4-1/2-year deal, while Arsenal announced that Armenia captain Mkhitaryan, who turned 29 on Sunday, had signed a long-term contract.

The completion of the transfer comes nearly a decade after United's first serious interest in the Chilean while still playing with Udinese in Serie A, and is the first deal to see an Arsenal player leave for Old Trafford since Robin van Persie's high-profile move in 2012.

"It's a dream come true", Mkhitaryan said, "because I've always dreamed of playing for Arsenal".

"I always said as a kid that I'd like to play for United, and I once spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson about it".

Reports indicated that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was keen on replacing Sanchez with Mkhitaryan, but the Armenian international's representative Mino Raiola suggested that a move was far from guaranteed.

"He will bring his ambition, drive and personality, qualities that make a Manchester United player and a player that makes the team stronger and the supporters proud of their club dimension and prestige".

Though United have a collection of senior players, the majority of the squad is relatively young.

For United, they get one of the Premier League's very best players to pair in attack with Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. "Thanks for every time you sing 'Alexis Sanchez Baby'".

And in a familiar quote thrown up by footballers when they sign for a new team, Mkhitaryan says it is a "dream" to sign for the club he supported as a boy.

Sanchez spent three-and-a-half years at Arsenal, having arrived at the Emirates Stadium from Barcelona in 2014 for around £32m. After scoring 47 goals in 141 matches for Barca, he went on to star for the Gunners, scoring 25 goals in his first season, 17 in his second and 30 last season.
