England beats Australia by 16-runs to clinch ODI series

Jos Buttler

A scintillating century from Jos Buttler led a late England charge against a full-strength Australian pace attack in the third one-day worldwide in Sydney on Sunday.

His efforts nearly denied Buttler the chance of a fifth ODI ton but he dashed through for two from the last ball of the innings to claim his just reward.

The 28-year-old found the boundary just once in his innings, before he was controversially given out caught behind following four minutes of third umpire replays to determine if the ball had carried to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

With the top order all making errors to leave England 107-4 in the 23rd over, Morgan and Buttler were forced to steadily accumulate and try to stay together to the 40-over mark before going on the attack.

England were stymied by accurate Australian bowling as their powerful batting order could not score a boundary for more than 10 overs in a complete contrast to their belligerence during the opening two games.

Joe Root, the only English top-six batsman with an worldwide wicket to his name, got through 8.4 overs while conceding just 60 runs to keep the visitors in the contest.

Smith (45) appeared to be building a winning position alongside Mitchell Marsh (55) but when he aimed a wild drive at the returning Wood it allowed Buttler to stoop for a much-debated catch.

But there was doubt about whether mild-mannered Buttler had grounded the catch and it was only after a lengthy delay that Smith was sent on his way by TV umpire Kumar Dharmasena.

Buttler's late surge enabled England to reach 302 for six.

Smith stood his ground but when the umpire Chris Gaffaney called for the video review, he indicated, with a "soft signal", that his decision was out.

Stoinis and Paine (31 not out) tried to do so and put on a stand of 74 that set up a tense finale, before some adept bowling from Wood ensured the hosts needed an unlikely 22 off the final over.

Australia recalled pacemen Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood for the match, the first time in the one-day series the trio of Cummins, Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, which spearheaded the 4-0 Ashes win, had been reunited.

But Cummins conceded an astonishing 24 runs from the last with Buttler smashing two sixes and a four in successive balls.

The English team, having won the first two matches and leading the series 2-0, announced an unchanged Playing XI.

But after Morgan and Buttler had patiently rebuilt the innings, Australia's bowlers had no answer to the inventive and aggressive late assault.

"Something to look at for Adelaide, hopefully I can do it a lot better and start helping this team win some games of cricket".

"It was our best performance as a group to date in the past two years", captain Eoin Morgan said.

"We've got enough technology and broadcast out there we should be able to make decisions off the camera and take the decisions away", Pietersen said on Channel Nine.
