Boris Johnson proposes Channel bridge

The Foreign Secretary said it was “ridiculous” that two of the world’s biggest economies are “linked by a single railway”

Conservative MP Mark Pritchard took to Twitter to say that Johnson's idea was "a bridge too far".

Sources close to Johnson said Macron was enthusiastic about the idea of a new link. CEO Guy Platten told The Guardian the Dover Strait - at the English Channel's narrowest part - "is the world's busiest shipping lane" and that the largest ships going through the strait can be around 70 meters, or almost 230 feet, tall.

Johnson has a penchant for large infrastructure projects.

The Channel Tunnel, opened in 1994, cost more than $10 billion to build, and was not heavily used at first, raising questions about whether it was worth the expense. "Let's finish things that are already under way before thinking of new ones". As a bridge designer I obviously would welcome the opportunity to build a bridge.

"It's [one of the] world's busiest shipping lanes".

Asked about the remarks, the prime minister's spokesman said: "I haven't seen any plans on that". Others pointed out that such a bridge would be incredibly expensive.

He added: 'What was agreed yesterday, and I think that's what the foreign secretary tweeted about as well, is a panel of experts who will look at major projects together including infrastructure'.

It is not the first time the idea of a Channel bridge has been raised - transport officials submitted plans for one in 1981.

However, in his tweet, Mr Johnson had referred specifically to the Channel crossing, saying: "Our economic success depends on good infrastructure and good connections".

Experts have said a bridge is "entirely feasible", possibly with a stretch of tunnel in the middle to avoid having an impact on one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. He campaigned heavily for an airport in the Thames estuary, dubbed "Boris Island" by the British media, which was discarded in favor of building a third runway at Heathrow airport.

Johnson's plans to build the so-called "garden bridge" in London, were dropped by his successor as London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, over concerns about its viability, leaving Londoners with a almost £50 million bill.
