Rajon Rondo says Isaiah Thomas doesn't deserve tribute from Celtics

Isaiah Thomas asks Celtics to skip tribute focus on Paul Pierce Feb. 11 Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

Thomas and the Celtics received a bit of backlash, as that date would have coincided with the retirement of Paul Pierce's #34 jersey, something Pierce himself wasn't too pleased with.

Isaiah Thomas had a Celtics video tribute scheduled on February 11, the same night Boston planned on honoring former star Paul Pierce and retiring his No. 34. While Paul Pierce said he didn't want Thomas' tribute video to run on the night his jersey number was to be retired, Rondo took it a step further.

"That's Pierce's night, but the video tribute ain't the whole night", Thomas said shortly after Pierce's original comments.

He knew the effect of this delay, but he and Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge came out to say that the tribute will be early and quick and will not overshadow Pierce's day.

"That's how we left it", said Pierce.

"I'd like to thank the Celtics for their gracious offer to play a video tribute on Feb 11th celebrating my 3 years in Boston", Thomas wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. "I just wanted my family to be here to see [my tribute] and that's what it came down to".

Boston traded Thomas to the Cavs for Kyrie Irving during the offseason.

Despite what Pierce and Rondo feel about the situation, the tribute videos for certain players are more for the fans who appreciated how hard that particular player played in there time there and a sign of respect.

"I'm with Pierce, man", said Allen.

"At the end of the conversation, [Ainge] said, 'If you don't want us to do Isaiah, we won't, '" Pierce said.

"Danny tried to sell me on it, but I told him, 'He had a shot, Danny, and he punked you on it".

"Everybody's getting a tribute video now". "They let it happen because they felt sorry how [the trade] went down".

And on Tuesday, that appears to be the conclusion Thomas eventually reached. And no one was ever comparing (Thomas) to Paul Pierce. Since then it has been Pierce's feelings that had the Celtics concerned.

Two of his former teammates, Rajon Rondo and Tony Allen, agree Pierce should receive his wish.
