Bannon to testify in Congress in wake of explosive book on

Former Virginia first lady Maureen Mc Donnell arrives at Federal Court with her attorney William Burck in Richmond Va. Monday Aug. 25 2014. Bannon reportedly hired Burck as he prepared for the House Intelligence Committee

Former chief White House strategist Steve Bannon will not stonewall special counsel Robert Mueller like he did the House Intelligence Committee, the Daily Beast reports.

That made Bannon the first person from Trump's inner circle to receive a grand jury subpoena from Mueller in the probe, which is also looking at whether the president has tried to obstruct the investigation.

In a separate investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, led by Mr Mueller, Mr Bannon will meet with investigators for an interview instead of appearing before a grand jury.

"So the position that the White House was evidently insisting upon in this interview was, even when Mr. Bannon might be speaking to outside parties, might be speaking to members of the press, might be talking publicly on the record or off the record, that somehow this was covered by a potential claim of executive privilege down the road".

The dispute inside the committee room comes as Bannon was also reportedly subpoenaed by Mueller in his criminal probe of Russian meddling.

But the committee subpoenaed him in the middle of his testimony, apparently because he refused to answer questions about his time in the White House or on Trump's transition team. The meeting turned contentious, as Bannon repeatedly said he could not answer questions, citing executive privilege.

As the Russian Federation investigation continues to hang over the White House, Republicans in Congress have sought to turn the tables on the FBI by calling into question the fairness and methods of senior agents.

Tensions rose after Bannon informed the committee Tuesday he would refuse to answer questions in their closed-door meeting.

Hicks' attorney declined to comment on the expected appearance before the House panel, as did a spokesman for Rep. Adam Schiff, the committee's top Democrat.

Lewandowski was sacked as campaign manager on June 20, 2016, and replaced by Paul Manafort, who has been indicted on money-laundering charges by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Bannon was sacked by the White House in August, though he continued to speak with Trump and tried to promote the president's agenda.

Bill Burck, a lawyer for Mr Bannon, could not immediately be reached for comment.

The White House is "going to be fully cooperative" with Mueller and "encourage everybody involved in the process to be fully cooperative", press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Wednesday. CNN reported Wednesday that Bannon had stuck a deal with the special counsel to submit to an informal interview in place of testifying. Bannon's refusal prompted a subpoena from the committee's Republican chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes of California.

Dearborn, who planned to remain in the West Wing for the first month or two of this year, worked for Trump for more than two years, helping to set up the campaign's Washington office.

"Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad s--, and I happen to think it's all of that, you should have called the Federal Bureau of Investigation immediately", Bannon said.

In the book by journalist Michael Wolff, Bannon criticized Trump for his firing of FBI Director James Comey and said it was "treasonous" of Trump's son Donald Trump Jr.to accept a June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer who he thought would provide damaging information about Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
