North Korean Samjiyon Band to perform during Pyeongchang Olympics

PyeongChang aims for sustainable Olympics

South and North Korea reached this agreement during a working-level meeting at the Tongilgak (Unification Pavilion) on the North Korean side of Panmunjeom on January 15 that was held to arrange a visit to South Korea by a group of North Korean artists.

While South Korea usually keeps the defections of North Koreans secret, it held an official press briefing the following day to announce the group had defected.

The statement says Pyongyang will dispatch the 140-member Samjiyon Orchestra to the South.

These acts could turn "peace Olympics" into "confrontation Olympics" if these media "get on the nerves of the dialogue partner (DPRK)" and "write brush at will", he warned.

The broadcast comes as the two Koreas are locked in talks to arrange North Korea's participation in the Olympics next month.

Tension has been high as the North staged a flurry of nuclear and missile tests since past year and Mr Kim traded threats of war and personal attacks with US President Donald Trump.

The two sides agreed to hold more working-level talks Wednesday.

In a press conference, Moon had indicated that the United States sanctions imposed by Trump prompted Pyongyang to go back to the negotiating table - something the North called "rubbish".

They also agreed to hold high-level talks next week - the first since 2015 - which will focus on "matters of mutual interest", including the North's participation in the Winter Olympics.

North Korea and its southern neighbour agreed during rare talks on Monday that Pyongyang will send a large orchestra to South Korea to perform at the Winter Olympics next month, according to the Unification Ministry in?Seoul.

"They should know that train and bus carrying our delegation to the Olympics are still in Pyongyang", the North's official Korean Central News Agency said.

Despite efforts to strengthen ties between the countries, a recent survey showed that 70 percent of South Korean residents opposed the idea of forming a joint team with their neighbors.

The KCNA also accused South Korea of letting the United States send another nuclear aircraft carrier, Stennis, to the West Pacific during the Peyongchang Olympics, despite its agreement with Washington to postpone joint military drills during the games.

Its leader Hyon Song-wol attended the Monday meeting as Pyongyang's vice chief delegate.

Foreign ministers from various countries meet in Canada on Tuesday to discuss the North Korean nuclear problem, focusing on ways to ensure enforcement of sanctions against the country. The group performs a mix of Western pop songs and state propaganda music.
