Alert In Japan After Toxic 'Fugu' Meat Accidentally Sold By Supermarket

Three packs containing fish livers were sold and while three have been tacked down another two are still unaccounted for

Five packs of Yorito fugu (blunt head blowfish) were sold at a supermarket located in Gamagori city, in the central Aichi Prefecture, by a licensed employee who had not removed the livers, according to Hiroko Mizuno, an official from the district's Life and Hygiene department.

Three packages of the risky delicacy have already been located and will be retrieved, but the authorities still don't know where the remaining two are, Takayanagi added.

A Japanese city used its emergency loudspeaker system in an attempt to recall four packages of blowfish meat after discovering a fifth one contained the potentially deadly liver.

But the fish's skins, intestines, ovaries and livers contain a poison called tetrodotoxin that can be fatal.

A warning has been issued in a Japanese city through emergency loudspeaker system to alert residents against consuming the blowfish or puffer fish after potentially poisonous parts were mistakenly sold.

JAPANESE authorities are on the hunt for a batch of deadly fish after toxic parts of the sea creature were accidentally put on sale.

In December a year ago it was revealed that more than 50,000 non-toxic fugu had been raised by a Japanese aquaculture company to help eliminate the dangers of preparing and eating the fish.

Fugu is one of Japan's most expensive winter delicacies, and is often served in thin slices of sashimi or hot pot. The toxin is considered to be 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide and there is no known antidote. Despite this, pufferfish poisoning claims several victims in Japan every year. The Souza family, from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, were given the fish by a friend who had returned from a fishing expedition and they were unaware of the potential dangers.

"Eating fugu liver can paralyze motor nerves, and in a serious case cause respiratory arrest leading to death", regional officials said in a warning statement. Only trained chefs with a license are allowed to prepare the fish for customers.
