United States envoy to Israel: PA is reason there's no peace

He Did a Wonderful Thing

He said the Ramallah meeting must take decisions on how to move forward.

He also accused Israel through its actions of ending the 1994 Oslo peace accords that form the basis of Palestinian ties with the Jewish state, saying the Palestinians would study all strategies for responding to it.

Mahmoud Abbas has sharply criticised Donald Trump, saying the Palestinian Authority (PA) will never accept the United States president's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas blasted Trump for his handling of Mideast peace efforts.

"We will not accept for the U.S.to be a mediator, because after what they have done to us - a believer shall not be stung twice in the same place", Abbas said, according to The New York Times.

"We are in a very risky stage", Abbas said.

On Friday, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas said it will not attend a central council meeting of the PLO.

Previous US administrations have hewed to the global consensus that East Jerusalem, which includes the Old City and its key religious sites, would be the capital of any Palestinian state.

"Politically, Jerusalem is our capital; in our religion, it is our capital; geographically, it is our capital", said Abbas.

The 1990s accords led to the PLO's official recognition of the state of Israel and, in turn, led to the establishment of the Palestinian Authority government.

Trump said in a Twitter message last week that the USA gives the Palestinians hundreds of millions of dollars each year and gets "no respect or appreciation".

On Tuesday the Swedish ambassador to the United Nations, Olof Skoog, said he was concerned that a withdrawal of funding for UNRWA "would be very negative both in terms of humanitarian needs of over 5 million people but also of course it would be destabilizing for the region".

Abbas had previously said the U.S. could no longer play any role in the Middle East peace process following Trump's move. This is what they're offering now: "Abu Dis", Abbas said.

Even so, Abbas reaffirmed his commitment to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
