Trump in 'humiliating backpedal' over spying law

Trump's reference to "abuse" that "the previous administration" allegedly inflicted upon him appears to be a reference to the baseless accusation he made last spring about the Obama administration "wire tapping" his phones at Trump Tower.

House lawmakers approved a measure reauthorizing the NSA's broad surveillance authority despite last-minute confusion after President Trump's contradictory tweets for and against the program. The House bill extends the legality of the surveillance program for six years, allowing the NSA and other intelligence agencies to continue their warrantless surveillance practices without impediment.

The White House has urged lawmakers to vote no on the amendment.

"House votes on controversial FISA ACT today", Trump tweeted.

"Today's vote is about foreign surveillance of foreign bad guys on foreign land", Trump tweeted. Over 55 members of the Democratic Party voted against the amendment. The intelligence and security officials, however, said that there was no need to put restrictions towards the government if it intends to get access to information for any security reason. It would have required the Federal Bureau of Investigation to get a warrant to continue even querying the database when Americans are involved.

WELNA: But fellow California Democrat Zoe Lofgren said some civil liberties protections that were added fell far short of what's needed.

"You pass the Amash Amendment and defeat this underlying bill, we go back to those days when we are flying blind on protecting our country from terrorism", Ryan stated. The part in question, Section 702, would in a roundabout way allow the intelligence community to collect information about USA citizens who have spoken to foreign nationals overseas without first obtaining a warrant.

As Trump's morning tweet sent shockwaves through Washington, the president once again took to Twitter, this time to voice support for the 702 authority.

The new law is now heading to the U.S. Senate, but as few senators have historically deviated from the House's stance on spy laws, the House vote was critical for the law's passage.

Republican leaders in both the House and the Senate have been counting on enough moderate Democrats and Republicans to stick together to extend the legal basis for the surveillance program with only minimal changes.

Privacy advocates from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) point out that the bill voted today also enhances the U.S. government's spy powers by expanding its dragnet data collection.

"No president should have this power". Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) said. But agencies also use it to spy on Americans through two loopholes: backdoor search and "about collection".
