Google's art selfie feature is U.S. only for now

Google's new app update allows users to match selfies with artwork

Google Arts & Culture has collaborated with more than 1,200 worldwide museums and galleries from 70 countries. By taking a selfie in-app, Arts & Culture searches its database to find a portrait who best matches your own face. Oh what price vanity, etc etc...

Google's Arts and Culture App has raced to the number one spot in the US Apple app store after it's new feature that lets users match their selfies with the famous artwork went viral.

We understand that's because it's still experimental and has been region-blocked - specifically it's limited to the U.S. right now. The app was created for users to meet the people, visit the places, learn about the world art and history and discover masterpieces from around the globe.

The app is extremely simple to use. Google uses computer vision technology to compare your selfie to thousands of historical artworks provided by its partner museums to see if any look like you. Prima, a photo-editing app, shot to fame for turning images into paintings, complete with strokes of an artist's brush. Once that comes up, everything else is fairly self-explanatory, and when you upload your photo you'll get your lookalike back, though it's questionable whether they actually live up to the name. Once you do that, you can submit your selfie, get matched, and then share it to your social media site of choice.

When I tried the app on Monday morning, Google spit out several different portraits that vaguely resembled me, showing a percentage match for each one.

The Google Arts & Culture app features thousands of photos, videos, manuscripts, and artworks from more than 1,200 global museums and galleries from 70 countries.
