Denmark charges 1000 with child porn for sharing sex videos

Facebook contacted US authorities after receiving reports of sex videos with teenagers circulating on its messaging service

Danish police have charged 1,004 young people for sharing video clips of two 15-year-olds having sex after being informed by social media platform Facebook. If they are found guilty, they could be listed for ten years on a register of child pornography offenders.

"This is a very large and complex case that has taken a long time to investigate".

The video initially came to USA authorities' attention after it was flagged by Facebook, as it is obliged to do for any sexual content involving individuals under the age of 18.

The force launched Operation Umbrella in Autumn 2017 after receiving a tip-off from Facebook that two explicit videos and a pornographic image of the young couple had been circulating among users in the Scandinavian nation. Some 800 are male (Bloomberg).

Facebook tipped off the USA authorities, who notified police in Denmark. "We've taken the matter very seriously as it has big consequences for those involved".

It also comes amid growing concern about sexting among school-age children and instances of revenge porn.

Some 800 boys and 200 girls were involved in distributing it, a lot of them aged between 15 and 20 and from all parts of Denmark. "This could be a violation of section 235 of the criminal code, distribution of child pornography", the police statement said. It can have consequences for the victims and also for those distributing.

Some suspects are over 18 and were called to police stations to be interviewed. The social network informed authorities in the United States as they are required to. Superintendent Flemming Kjaerside is from the Danish National Police's Cyber Crime Centre.

The charges followed an extensive, co-ordinated police effort that dates back to March 2015, when the video was widely shared online and gained national attention as "one of the worst sexual violations recorded on camera in Denmark".

Danish police have charged more than 1,000 young people with distributing sexually explicit material.

The police are in the process of charging them.
