Uber looking for women drivers in Saudi Arabia

Saudi state to 'take control' of Binladin group after chairman's arrest

King Salman, the ruler of Saudi Arabia in September past year issued a historic decree that would allow women to drive for the first time.

In November 2017, the Jeddah Women's Championship organized the first women's basketball tournament in Saudi Arabia, which was held in Al Jawhara Stadium. Sheikh Saad Al Hijiri sparked outrage when he said that women should not be allowed to drive because their brains were smaller than men's.

"We expect the sales to rise in the hours ahead of the match", said Adel Kabli, the operating manager of e-ticket vendor Makani.

Women tourists below that age will still need to be accompanied by a family member, a Saudi tourism official told the Arab News daily.

Football is the number one sport in Saudi Arabia, where the national team qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

In a historic decision in late 2017, King Salman gave Saudi women the right to drive, abolishing an nearly three-decade ban based on religious reasons.

Saudi state to 'take control' of Binladin group after chairman's arrest

The initiative, spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, aims to make Saudi a more modern, tourist-friendly destination.

But in September, hundreds of women were allowed to enter a sports stadium in the capital Riyadh, used mostly for football matches, for the first time to attend celebrations marking Saudi Arabia's national day.

"I think the message to say that nobody is above the law is a very important message to send to the Saudi people...and to foreign investors".

Careem has already received thousands of applications from Saudi women interested in becoming drivers, Elyas says.

Before the ban was lifted, women were previously arrested for trying to enter a stadium, ABC News reports. However to achieve this, he must grow non-oil industries and increase domestic spending, for which he much include female Saudi citizens more and more into public life.

The move to open up stadiums to women for the first time was announced last October.
