Myanmar Faces Truth, Admits Soldiers Behind Rohingya Mass Grave

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Min Aung Hlaing, the military's commander in chief, said soldiers and villagers had confessed to killing 10 suspected Rohingya fighters on September 2.

Villagers had dug a pit and the men were ordered to enter it, where they were shot by the security forces.

After months denying any wrongdoing, Myanmar has admitted its forces helped kill 10 Rohingya in custody in an apparent bid to blame a few rogue soldiers for what the global community alleges is part of an organized ethnic cleansing campaign.

"Action will be taken against the villagers... and the security force members who violated the rules of engagement according to the law", the statement said, adding that those who failed to report the incident would be similarly punished.

Asked if the revelations about the killing at the village of Inn Din, about 50 km (30 miles) north of the state capital Sittwe, could be a concern for refugees who are being asked to return, Suu Kyi said: "Some people might be afraid, but this is not something that has happened right now". They claim the killed Rohingyas were captured by security forces after they clashed with the military.

The military refers to members of the Rohingya Muslim minority as "Bengalis", a term the Rohingya reject as implying they are illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

The captives should have been handed over to the police, in line with procedure, but the militants were attacking "continuously" and had destroyed two military vehicles with explosives, it said.

Asked at a joint news conference with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono about the rare admission of wrongdoing by the military, known as the Tatmadaw, Suu Kyi said: "The Tatmadaw investigated and will take necessary action on that". This meant that "there were no conditions to transfer the 10 Bengali terrorists to the police station and so it was chose to kill them".

Kono urged her to improve the human rights situation for Rohingya people who have fled to neighboring Bangladesh.

Thousands of Rohingyas had left the violence of what United Nations had called Ethnic cleansing, since August 25 in 2017.

More than 650,000 Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh to escape a brutal crackdown in which security forces have been accused of systematic abuses tantamount to ethnic cleansing.

The Rohingya have long faced discrimination and repression in Rakhine State where conflict with ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, stemming from violence by both sides, goes back generations.

The captives should have been handed over to police, the army statement said, but with militants mounting continuous attacks and destroying two military vehicles, "there were no conditions to transfer the 10 Bengali terrorists to the police station and so it was made a decision to kill them".
