Le'Veon Bell says next year is 'irrelevant' after franchise tag comments

Le’Veon Bell says next year is ‘irrelevant’ after franchise tag comments

That being said, it's odd to hear this come out before the Steelers' first playoff game of the season. Unfortunately, this time it was Pittsburgh Steelers running back, Le'Veon Bell. "I just want to be valued where I'm at".

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler says Bell said Thursday he "would definitely consider" sitting out the 2018 season or retiring if the team used the franchise tag on him for a second straight year. Bell's desire with regards to the terms of a new contract is simple: for the team to show that it values everything he brings to the table.

Bell said: "Just get the numbers straight, exactly where we want them".

However, Bell has told ESPN that he's prepared to sit out a season, or even retire from the National Football League, if he is franchise tagged for the second consecutive year. The 321 rushing attempts represented a career high for Bell, the most since he tallied 290 rushing attempts in 2014. Bell sat out virtually all of training camp this summer before returning to the team September 1. GM Kevin Colbert would then have to weigh what's best; for an aging roster and a Super Bowl window that might be closing, he could decide it behooves the team to get the 2018 selection. In his five NFL seasons, he has played 62 games and amassed 7,996 yards, more than anyone else during the same stretch since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, according to ESPN.

That's probably the last time we'll hear Bell talk about his franchise tag this postseason. Any team trading for him knows what he wants to earn - last offseason, Bell suggested that he should be paid as the top running back and receive a salary boost that pays him like a top-12 receiver, considering his rare pass-catching prowess. Bell has wanted a massive contract, citing the desire to help all running backs in an era that has devalued the position.

Bell is once again set to hit free agency this summer. "They tag me again, it will be me (saying), 'OK, do I want to play on the tag or do I not want to play on the tag?' That's what it comes down to". He mentioned the words "Super Bowl" several times in the interview.

Teams can place a franchise tag on player from February 20 to March 6.
