'Bomb cyclone' brings travel chaos and deaths to USA north

More than a dozen dead as powerful blizzard batters US east coast

(The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm.) This particular bomb cyclone sweeping through the East Coast is forecasted to drop by 36 millibars, which is a lot.

"The unsafe second part of this storm will be the record breaking cold this weekend with lows in the single digits this weekend for parts of the northeast and windchills below zero", Dean said.

A city worker uses a snow blower to clear a sidewalk in Brooklyn on the first workday following a blizzard that set a new single-day record for snowfall in both NY and Washington, D.C., on January 25, 2016. Throughout eastern MA and eastern ME, the combination of wind and snow could create blizzard conditions, especially if the storm wobbles west.

Forecasters expect the storm to become a "bomb cyclone" because its pressure is predicted to fall so fast- an indicator of explosive strengthening.

"As this weather system moves through state, families and visitors across North Florida should prepare for potential hard freezes and below-freezing travel conditions", Scott said in a statement.

Generally, a dusting to two inches of snow should fall in the metro region, with potentially two to four inches in our east and southeast areas near the Chesapeake Bay.

And, as usual, everyone has a different take on what track this massive storm will take.

And if a winter hurricane doesn't sound bad enough, then how about "bomb cyclone"? This Nor'easter is expected to "bomb" out by Thursday afternoon just off the coast of New England. Locally, the biggest question remains how far west will the snow advance? Wind chill describes the combined effect of wind and low temperatures on bare skin.

The weather pattern has already brought snow to the US South as far down as Florida."The situation has continued to deteriorate", said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as he declared a state of emergency on Thursday.

"This could be one of the strongest offshore storms we've ever experienced with a central pressure in the 950s (millibars range)", Dean said Thursday.

Bombogenesis is said to occur when a storm's central barometric pressure drops at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.

The upcoming frigid weekend won't be coldest the region has ever experienced, however.

And it's not over when the storm passes: It's pulling in a brutal blast of air via the polar vortex that will plunge already-icy temperatures in the eastern U.S. to record lows tomorrow (Jan. 6) and throughout the weekend.

On Saturday morning, subzero cold is forecast over nearly all of New England, with single digits in the Mid-Atlantic.

The fierce cold will reach from New England to the Midwest and down to the Carolinas, forecasters warned, adding that low-temperature records could be broken across the region over the coming days. The high tide in Portland on Thursday was 13.79 feet, almost reaching the 14.17 foot mark reported during the Blizzard of 1978.
