Former Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine lands with Packers

REPORT: Packers expected to hire Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator

The Green Bay Packers are expected to hire former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine as their new defensive coordinator, taking over for the recently fired Dom Capers, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. He spent the 2013 season as the Bills' defensive coordinator, and his unit ranked 10th. He went 10-22 in two seasons with the Browns (2014-15).

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy interviewed Pettine for the defensive coordinator's job Tuesday.

Pettine started his head-coaching career with the Browns with a 7-4 record and had the team in sole possession of first place in the AFC North Division in mid-November for the first time ever.

McCarthy fired Capers after the Packers finished 7-9 and ranked 22nd in total defense.

His units were ranked in the top 10 in total defenses in the National Football League every one of those seasons, earning him a two-year stint as head coach of the Browns. Prior to that, however, Pettine was a successful defensive coordinator.

The #Packers have wrapped up their period of uncertainty: Joe Philbin is the offensive coordinator. His defenses all finished in the top 10.

His one year in Buffalo was another top 10 finish.

The Packers also considered hiring in-house and had interviewed their remaining defensive assistants: Joe Whitt, Darren Perry and Winston Moss. He's had roles including assistant offensive line coach, tight ends coach, offensive line coach and eventually he became the offensive coordinator from 2007-11.
