Vivo Showcases Its In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Smartphone at CES 2018

Vivo unveils first in-display fingerprint smartphone at CES 2018

Apple too was expected to come up with in-display TouchID but the company went ahead with FaceID facial recognition on the iPhone X. But at CES this year, a couple of handset players are incorporating the in-display fingerprint sensor to their smartphones, which are ready to go into mass production.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is in full swing, and Vivo has just shown off the world's first smartphone with a working in-display fingerprint scanner. Vivo is relying on the optical fingerprint sensor from Synaptics, which had announced this technology towards the end of 2017.

It will be interesting to see how the new biometric scanning technology will affect the smartphone usage and the industry trends. The availability of Vivo's first smartphone with fingerprint scanner on its display screen will be announced in early 2018. The fingerprint scanner will be placed between the glass panel and the OLED panel: when the finger will touch the glass panel, the OLED panel will illuminate the finger and the small chip will process the beams of light emitted. If you are already aware, so far, no smartphone brand has achieved this yet and this makes vivo the first to do so.

It's a similar story with Samsung's latest flagship smartphones, although it has shifted the fingerprint sensor to the rear of its devices rather than dispense with it completely. According to a press statement from the company, this smartphone with the new fingerprint scanner technology is "ready-to-produce".

Vivo first presented a prototype of company's fingerprint scanning solution at MWC Shanghai 2017 based on an ultrasonic sensor.

"With our efforts in extensive consumer research and long-term R&D investment, Vivo is well positioned to pioneer the development of fingerprint scanning technology".

The recent fingerprint scanning technology aims to offer users a better and a more convenient way in terms of fingerprint authentication experiences.

We expect that the Vivo X20 will be the smartphone bearing the under-display fingerprint sensor.
