Teacher questioning superintendent's pay removed from board meeting in handcuffs

Deyshia Hargrave, an English and language arts teacher at Rene A. Rost Middle School in Abbeville, addressed the school board while they were considering a vote to approve Superintendent Jerome Puyau's contract with a $38,000 pay raise, WGNO reported.

Board members complained that the meeting was to discuss the superintendent's contract, not teacher pay. "I'm going to use the word 'absurd, ' that we're even considering giving [Puyau] a raise when these teachers are working this hard and not getting a dime", she said.

Following the weird - and violent - arrest, Vermilion Parish School Board Superintendent Jerome Puyau told the local news outlet the district won't press charges against Hargrave.

The National Education Association reported that Louisiana saw the largest decrease in average public school teacher salary between 2014 and 2015, with the average salary for the 2015-2016 school year coming out to approximately $47,000.

After she asked several questions, board President Anthony Fontana ruled Hargrave out of order and warned her that the public comment portion of the meeting was not a question-and-answer session. After being called on a second time, when Hargrave tried, once again, to ask a question, she was told to leave.

Hargrave reportedly left the meeting, but in the hallway cuffs were placed on her. She was, however, charged with "remaining after being forbidden" and "resisting an officer", both of which can be brought by a marshal, and do not require the school board's cooperation. Due to the location of her arrest and the arresting agency's jurisdiction, which includes the city limits of Abbeville, she was booked in and bonded from the local police department.

Hargrave added that the raise was unwarranted, saying teachers and students have met their performance targets while class sizes have grown. Ms Hargrave did not appear to be raising her voice during the meeting.

The station also reported that it is unclear whether the marshal acted on his own volition or was instructed to arrest Hargrave by a school board member.
