Two killed in Iran protests: deputy governor

Iranian protesters

According to Iranian state TV, Irib News, the government said social media in the country would be temporarily limited as the government warned protesters they would pay a price if days of unrest continued.

The protests - which began on Thursday in Mashhad, Iran's second-largest city - were prompted by discontent over the country's weak economy and alleged corruption.

Authorities have previously confirmed four deaths.

Meanwhile on Sunday, an Iranian anti-regime protester said over Israel's Channel 10 that the Iranian people are "taking to the streets spontaneously in most cities in Iran" and have concluded that they must "get to the root" of Iran's problems, "the regime and the leadership".

Hundreds of people have been arrested.

Later Monday, state TV said six people were killed in the western town of Tuyserkan, 295 kilometers (185 miles) southwest of Tehran. Mehr also reported that two protesters died in Dorud on Saturday.

Demonstrations were also reported in a number of other cities on Sunday night, including the capital Tehran.

Khademi said the cause of deaths in Izeh wasn't immediately known.

"We have no information yet whether it was protesters or the police that fired yesterday [Sunday] and the issue is under investigation", the report quoted him as saying.

"Many reports of peaceful protests by Iranian citizens fed up with regime's corruption & its squandering of the nation's wealth to fund terrorism overseas", he wrote.

On Twitter, President Trump has sought to portray the unrest as the direct result of "Iranian citizens fed up with regime's corruption & its squandering of the nation's wealth to fund terrorism overseas".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, whose administration struck the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, campaigned on freeing the men, though they remain detained.

While there is frustration over Iran's support for the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Palestinians and Lebanon's Hezbollah, high unemployment, rising fuel prices and poor economic prospects are of far greater concern.

While police have arrested some protesters, the country's powerful Revolutionary Guard and its affiliates have not intervened as they have in other unauthorised demonstrations since the 2009 election.
