TTV Dhinakaran Claims Jayalalithaa's RK Nagar Seat

TTV Dhinakaran Supporters Celebrate As He Leads In RK Nagar By-Elections

While Dhinakaran polled 89,013 votes, Madhusudhanan got 48,306 votes.

Dhinakaran has claimed Amma's RK Nagar seat as per by-election results by more than 40,000 votes.

The bypoll held on December 21 had seen a record 77.68 per cent voter turnout. The seat was earlier represented by the former Chief Minister of Chennai J Jayalalithaa.

He said, "It is not a party name and symbol that decide victory in elections". I have already said the "Two Leaves" will be a success symbol only if it was with Puratchi Thalaivar (MGR) and Amma (Jayalalithaa). RK Nagar, represented twice by Jayalalithaa, has an electorate of 2,28,234, comprising 1,10,903 men, 1,17,232 women and 99 transgenders. Around 100 officials will be involved in the counting process which will take place in 19 rounds.

Every time a control unit of EVM was opened, nail-biting moments were witnessed as Dhinakaran continued to post impressive margins round after round, leaving both the ruling AIADMK and main opposition DMK agents in disbelief.

The death of Jayalalithaa was followed by a split in the AIADMK party which she had headed, and her aide V K Sasikala was sent to jail in connection with a disproportionate assets case.

Surrounded by smiling cadres as night fell in Chennai, TTV Dhinakaran on Sunday hailed the beginning of a new chapter for the AIADMK and vowed to win back its symbol from the government, minutes after being confirmed as the new MLA from RK Nagar.

Dhinakaran contested as an independent on the pressure cooker symbol after the Election Commission allotted the "two leaves" symbol to the factions led by K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam.
