Trump's wall gets go-ahead... at his golf resort in Co Clare

The dunes at Doonbeg Golf Club

An estimated 15-20 metres of dune facing the edge of the golf course has been eroded since 2002, said Trump Hotels.

Trump had initially requested permission from Clare County, where his golf course Trump International Golf Links Doonbeg is located, to build a 28km long sea wall.

He would also be required to hire an ecologist, who will oversee the work and be responsible for maintaining the structure.

Clare County Council said the decision can be appealed within four weeks.

Residents and environmental groups objected, saying the wall - which is created to protect the golf course from coastal erosion - could alter the coastline at other points and harm wildlife.

The Trump family's plan to build a sea wall aimed at protecting their Irish golf resort was approved, the latest twist in a project that had stoked tensions in a tiny village on the Atlantic coast. "Building a barrier in the middle of the beach is going to change the whole way the dune system works", Ryan said in a statement. "You can't ignore [the fact that] the owner in this case is so notorious but the concerns were there long before he bought the course", Green party leader Eamon Ryan said, the Guardian reported.

Commenting on the decision, Joe Russell, general manager at the hotel and golf resort said, "This decision demonstrates the council's commitment to support local business and protect the economic future of the region". "Local jobs would be better protected by adjusting the course to the evolving natural world".

As part of the planning conditions, Mr Trump's resort management will have to keep a close eye on the impact on beach users, the Carrowmore dune system itself, and plants and animals.

Mr Trump will have to fork out more than €265,000 (£235,000) for the County Council to cover the cost of adding or repairing roads and footpaths in the area and other public infrastructure. Interestingly, the original application cited "global warming and its effects" - something Trump has referred to as a "hoax" - to justify the wall's construction.
