North Korea Testing Anthrax as Payload in its ICBMs

Tie-breaker name drawing 1 more recount coming in Virginia

North Korea began tests to load anthrax onto its intercontinental ballistic missiles, a reports said Tuesday.

On Monday, the White House released its U.S. National Security Strategy that said North Korea is "pursuing chemical and biological weapons which could also be delivered by missile".

The report cited by Bloomberg News says the North is testing the biological agent to see if it can survive the enormous temperatures the missiles generate.

Anthrax is an infection of the skin, lungs, intestines or blood caused by Bacillus anthracis.

North Korea rejected United States allegations that it is developing biological weapons, saying that the claim is part of Washington's scheme to stifle the regime, according to a Yonhap report, on Wednesday.

North Korea claimed it had completed its nuclear force after it fired a new Hwasong-15 ICBM in late November. Nuclear-armed North Korea said on August 30 that it had fired a missile over Japan the previous day, the first time it has ever acknowledged doing so. USA troops stationed in South Korea have been vaccinated against anthrax for over a decade, according to the newspaper.

North Korea denied the reports, however, with the state-run Korean Central News Agency citing Pyongyang's adherence to the Biological Weapons Convention, thus "maintain [ing] its consistent stand to oppose development, manufacture, stockpiling and possession of biological weapons".

South Korean scientists have been working to train artificial intelligence that can detect anthrax at fast speeds to combat any attack from its neighbor, with which it technically remains at war.

Rebecca Hersman, a former Defense Department deputy assistant secretary for countering weapons of mass destruction, was quoted in a Washington Post article speaking about the country's bio-weapon program: "North Korea is bad enough when you're talking about their nuclear and missiles program".
