Mnuchin says he has no reason to think Trump will fire Mueller

The emails are from about a dozen of Trump's inner circle during the transition period

A lawyer for Donald Trump's transition team has alleged special counsel Robert Mueller unlawfully received tens of thousands of emails, in the latest attack on the credibility of the probe into Russian meddling in the U.S. election. The effort to rein in the probe is expected to increase as the Russian Federation prosecutors continue their work while they simultaneously prepare for a criminal trial next year against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates.

The e-mails, handed to Mueller by the federal General Services Administration, reportedly number in the "tens of thousands", according to a letter sent to Congress by the organization Trump for America on Saturday.

The seven-page letter, obtained by Axios, says: "We understand that the Special Counsel's Office has subsequently made extensive use of the materials it obtained from the GSA, including materials that are susceptible to privilege claims".

(TFA), also called on the committees "to protect future presidential transitions from having their private records misappropriated by government agencies, particularly in the context of sensitive investigations intersecting with political motives".

The emails are from about a dozen of Trump's inner circle during the transition period.

Mr Loewentritt said Mr Beckler did not make a commitment to the transition team that requests from law enforcement for materials would be routed through transition lawyers.

Langhofer claims the production of transition materials to the Special Counsel's Office by GSA violated "GSA's duties to" the Trump campaign, a Presidential Transition Act requirement that "computers or communications services" to the transition team be "secure", and the Fourth Amendment.

Langhofer also said that a GSA official appointed by Trump in May had assured the transition in June that any request for records from Mueller's office would be referred to the transition's attorneys. Several high-level Trump advisers sometimes used other email accounts, including their campaign accounts, to communicate about transition issues between Election Day and the inauguration.

The special counsel - on the clock since mid-May, though he did inherit more than a year's worth of FBI investigations related to the election hacking and other lines of inquiry - has already obtained a guilty plea and cooperation from former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

But in his letter Langhofer said that Mueller's team has been "actively using" the emails obtained from GSA as part of the ongoing investigation. "Baloney. This is another attempt to discredit Mueller as his #TrumpRussia probe tightens", Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat and member of the House Judiciary and Intelligence panels, posted on Twitter. "He wants to shut down these investigations and he wants to fire special counsel Mueller".
