"Clear ID" is Synaptics new under-display fingerprint sensor which is set to enter mass production for the first time next year. Synaptics indirectly answers that my qualifying it's partner as one of the Top 5 OEMs.

If we talk about the availability of this phone, Samsung may launch this Galaxy A8 (2018) smartphone along with the bigger version, Galaxy A8+ (2018) in the early 2018. It is, however, also hard to discount Xiaomi and LG. In order to be able to do this, however, Samsung will likely have some kind of alternative to Qualcomm Quick Charge aboard its new Exynos processors. Coincidentally, Synaptics is also doing its hardest to claim how its Clear ID is faster and more secure than face 3D facial recognition, taking an indirect swipe at Apple. You will also get a better Live Focus feature thanks to the tweaks included in this update, but as noted, it's still limited to a few markets, although we expect more Samsung Galaxy Note 8 users to join the party sooner than later.

The manual doesn't go into to too much detail about internal specs, although it does point out that the phones will be shipping with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, which is disappointing yet unsurprising considering they are mid-range devices from Samsung.

Back when rumors were swirling about Apple's iPhone X, the prospect of where the Touch ID sensor for the device might end up was just one of the open questions. It could still use it for, say, the Galaxy Note 9, but not within the timeline Synaptics is boasting of.

"Consumers prefer fingerprint authentication on the front of the phone, and with the industry quickly shifting to bezel-free OLED infinity displays, the natural placement of the fingerprint sensor is in the display itself", writes Kevin Barber, Synaptics's mobile division senior vice president and general manager.

So the question remains unanswered.

The new fingerprint sensor technology uses optical technology to securely scan fingerprints. First up, we have word from Synaptics which has just revealed a new fingerprint scanner design, the much-coveted "In-Display" design that many phone makers have tried and failed to implement within the past year and a bit.
