Heisman Trophy 2017: Baker Mayfield season highlights

Mayfield won the award over fellow finalists Bryce Love of Stanford and 2016's Heisman Trophy recipient Lamar Jackson of Louisville.

The quarterback is the sixth player in Sooners history to become a Heisman victor.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield went from walk-on to the best collegiate football player in the country, winning the 2017 Heisman Trophy award. He also ran for 310 yards and five more touchdowns on the ground. Mayfield's performance, however, continues to be otherworldly and, without question, Heisman-worthy. Two signature moments stamped his Heisman campaign: a 31-16 road win over Big Ten champion Ohio State in which he threw for 386 yards and three scores, and a wild 62-52 win over Oklahoma State. He's formed a ideal pairing with head coach Lincoln Riley, his offensive coordinator the past two years, as he established himself as a master of Oklahoma's wide-open offense with impressive arm strength, mobility and improvisational ability.

For the second year in a row, he completed 71 percent of his passes, which led the nation.

NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah has noted improvement in Mayfield as a pocket passer this season, and analyst Bucky Brooks has compared him to New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees. The Sooners will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup January 1.

In other years, that may have been reason enough to not vote for Mayfield if the other candidates were even in the same stratosphere as him, but they're not, and that's why he may set a record for margin of victory when the Heisman is announced.
