Mikheil Saakashvili, Ex-President of Georgia, Arrested in Ukraine, Again

Ukraine Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili

But few analysts expect Mr. Saakashvili's supporters, who see the former Georgian leader as a hero in the battle against corruption, to generate anything like the wave of discontent that toppled Mr. Yanukovych in February 2014.

Photo Supporters of Mikheil Saakashvili gathered outside the detention center where he was being held in Kiev.

Saakashvili became a regional governor in Ukraine in 2015 at Poroshenko's invitation but they later fell out.

Mr Saakashvili has been leading anti-corruption rallies against Mr Poroshenko. The president, his former patron, rescinded his Ukrainian citizenship in July while he was out of the country.

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko addresses the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, October 11, 2017. The 49-year-old is facing the threat of possible extradition to Georgia, where he is wanted on criminal charges he says were trumped up for political reasons.

Since then, he has pushed to galvanize opposition to Poroshenko and other government figures he contends are corrupt. He climbed out on the roof and threatened to jump, but police grabbed him and took him to a van.

Law enforcement officers searched Saakashvili's apartment in Kyiv on December 5, dragged him off the roof, and bundled him into a auto.

Prosecutors, who say Mr Saakashvili is being funded by businessmen close to Russian Federation, released audio and video recordings which they say proved he had received hundreds of thousands of dollars from the criminal group.

"Saakashvili will be detained and the best thing he could do, if he were a man, if he really loved Ukraine even a little, would be to come today to Volodymyrska Street (security service headquarters) to testify to investigators", he told parliament.
