YouTube Cutting Access To Amazon Fire TV On New Year's Day

Don't Buy Anyone an Echo

It is also preventing Amazon's Echo Show device from accessing the video streaming service. Google, Apple, Amazon, Samsung, Facebook, they all need each other and yet also will happily work with anybody to get a leg up on their hated friends and beloved enemies.

Google shut down its video service on Amazon's touchscreen-enabled smart speaker on Tuesday and plans to stop supporting YouTube on the Fire TV by January 1.

Amazon said in a statement: "Echo Show and Fire TV now display a standard web view of YouTube.com and point customers directly to YouTube's existing website".

You may remember that back in September, Google pulled YouTube support for Amazon's Echo Show, with Google claiming that the speaker's version of the YouTube app original app violated its terms of service and lacked a number of important features.

Google is withdrawing its popular YouTube app from Amazon's smart speaker and video streaming devices, marking the latest skirmish in a rare public battle between the tech titans that are increasingly butting heads over TV and gadgets. Amazon announced today that the Amazon Prime Video app is now available on Apple TV devices in more than 100 countries.

The flaring tensions between Amazon and Google come several months after Amazon appeared to have settled its differences with Apple.

The product war between Amazon and Google reached a new level today.

But YouTube is a heavy piece of leverage for California-based Google.

The answer ultimately boils down to two huge technology companies that are competing with each other in some areas, yet each needs the other in key ways. However, Amazon probably isn't all that excited about Google competing with them in hardware on their own store, though I'd imagine Amazon's customers aren't going to be happy if YouTube isn't a part of their shiny new device's ecosystem.

That's not an unreasonable position to take, as the company surely wants more control over the YouTube experience on Amazon's products, but unfortunately the only people getting hurt in this feud are customers.

"We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services", the spokeswoman said in a statement. "We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible".

Although Amazon markets its devices as having Fire OS, it is, in reality, a customized version of Android, meaning that the incompatibilities are purely artificial.

A YouTube spokesperson placed the blame firmly on Amazon's refusal to carry Google's products.
