Arizona State releases statement regarding Herm Edwards

In eight years as an National Football League head coach with the New York Jets and Kansas City, Edwards compiled a 54-74 record.

Days after multiple reports said Herm Edwards would be Arizona State's next football coach, the Sun Devils made it official.

In the end, it doesn't matter as long as his Sun Devils "play...to win...the game" and make some noise in the Pac-12.

Hopefully, the big man upstairs takes no issue. "Equally important, the head coach will be a dynamic and tireless recruiter", Ray Anderson, ASU's vice president of athletics, said in the release.

The wording here, however, is unique, as Arizona State states "the department's New Leadership Model will be similar to an National Football League approach using a general manager structure".

While Edwards hasn't coached since being fired by the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2008 season, the 63-year-old showed he had plenty of fire on Monday.

Edwards, who will oversee the New Leadership Model, arrives in Tempe with a football legacy that has impacted thousands, whether as a player, coach, analyst, motivational speaker and author, or community advocate and philanthropist.

Anderson, who once represented Edwards as an agent, doesn't buy that line of thinking.

In the press release announcing the hire Sunday night, ASU said Edwards' appointment won't be just a coaching change, but will include a complete overhaul of the model the program has operated under.

Edwards, who was scheduled to be introduced on Monday, hasn't coached at the college level since he was an assistant at San Jose State in 1989, making his choice as Todd Graham's replacement somewhat of a surprise.

Edwards posted a 39-41 record in five seasons with the Jets. "... I stand ready for the challenge of working with them to elevate Sun Devil Football".

"Passion for my faith, my family and my occupation as a football coach are the things that have driven me back to the grass", Edwards said in a statement.
