Israel Targets Iranian Military Base SW of Damascus

Syria intercepts 2 Israeli missiles

In a fresh escalation in the Middle East, Israel has fired missiles at a military position near Damascus over last night while Syria's air defence system has claimed of thwarting some of the attacks.

The "blatant assault" led to material losses at the site in the countryside around the capital, the Syrian state media reported. Details of the attack are still unclear, as the first reports were in the Israeli media, and within a matter of hours were removed.

"At half past midnight (local time, Saturday), the Israeli enemy fired several surface-to-surface missiles at a military position in Damascus province", SANA news agency reported.

Israel has acknowledged carrying out repeated air and missile strikes in Syria since the beginning of the war six years ago in order to stop arms deliveries to Hizballah. But the Prime Minister's Office saw fit to put out the short clip relating to Iranian presence in Syria on Saturday evening.

"We will not allow that regime to entrench itself militarily in Syria, as it seeks to do, for the expressed objective of eradicating our state", Netanyahu said.

An Israeli military spokesperson declined to comment. Satellite images showed construction at the alleged base.

Furthermore, the very title of the November piece - "Iran building permanent military base in Syria - claim" - underscores the complete lack of evidence for such a claim, which the BBC notes in the article is "impossible to independently verify".
