Russian Federation rejects USA call to cut ties with North Korea

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday (01/12) that a United States threat to destroy North Korea in the event of a war was "a bloodthirsty tirade" and that military action against Pyongyang would be a big mistake, Russian news agencies reported.

Lavrov also rejected a US call to cut ties with North Korea in response to Pyongyang's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Russian Federation yesterday accused the United States of trying to provoke North Korean leader Kim Jong Un into "flying off the handle" over his missile programme to hand Washington a pretext to destroy his country.

Last month President Donald Trump said that Russian Federation was hurting United States efforts to disarm North Korea of its nuclear weapons and its move to reject and condemn calls to cut ties with Pyongyang proves Trump right.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Wednesday called for other countries to sever all ties with Pyongyang, including cutting trade links and expelling North Korean workers.

At the Council meeting convened at the request of the US, Japan and South Korea, Under Secretary-General Jeffrey Feltman said the missile launched on Wednesday had travelled about 950 kilometres before falling into the sea in Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Mr Trump, in a tweet, said yesterday that China appeared to have had little impact on the North Korean leader, expressing wonder that his people and military "put up" with conditions there.

"The Americans need to explain to us all if they want to find a pretext to destroy North Korea". And then suddenly ... they announced large-scale exercises in December.

The secretary stressed that Russian Federation will not allow military action against North Korea, after the USA diplomat at the United Nations threatened Pyongyang with destruction.

Tillerson's remarks echo those made on Wednesday by US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, who stressed that the nations of the world "have it within our power to further isolate, diminish and, God willing, reverse the unsafe course of the North Korean regime".

Russia's maneuvering into the North Korea crisis is more than just a single-serving of humiliation for the United States - it's indicative, said Armstrong, of a larger trend. China's Deputy Permanent Representative Wu Haitao in effect rejected any new sanctions suggested by Haley, saying that Beijing was committed to finding a diplomatic solution.

North Korea, in an announcement broadcast on state TV, said this week it had successfully tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile called Hwasong-15.
