Magnitude-4.4 quake hits Delaware

4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Rumbles DC Area

A magnitude 4.4 natural disaster with its epicenter about 100 miles south of Saucon Valley in central DE was felt Thursday afternoon by some local residents, but not by others. He said his office is reaching out to the National Weather Service and U.S. Geological Survey to find out more information.

A 4.4 magnitude natural disaster is considered minor and usually causes minimal damage, if any.

"There are no reports of damage or injuries at this time", said Delaware Emergency Management Agency in a release.

Paul Caruso is a geophysicist with the USGS's quake information center in Colorado.

WUSA9 Meteorologist Howard Bernstein compared the DE quake to one DC felt in August 2011. He said the quake was widely felt around the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Delaware quake is a rare seismological occurrence for the U.S. Northeast, officials said, with the temblor's strength equaling the estimated magnitude of an 1871 quake that was believed to be the largest ever in the state. Workers at the statehouse in Dover streamed into the streets after the quake to see what happened.

Others commented that they had not felt a thing. If you did, tell us where you were when you did, and how it felt.

AP writes that Sgt. Rene Carberry - a spokeswoman at Dover Air Force Base - said people on the military installation felt it; some went outside to see if something fell down.

The latest tremors come just over two weeks after a 7.3 quake killed more than 400 people in western Kermanshah province, close to the border with neighboring Iraq.
