Microsoft unveils plans for a new modern headquarters

Microsoft plans upgrade for Redmond headquarters

Microsoft's decision to expand on the footprint of its campus in Redmond, Washington, its home since 1986, is in contrast to the highly-publicized office expansion plans of Seattle-based Amazon. The project will include 18 new buildings, 6.7 million square feet of renovated workspace and $150 million in transportation infrastructure improvements as well as new public spaces, green spaces and sports fields. All vehicle parking will go underground, and in its place will spring up sports fields, a tree-lined boulevard, and a two-acre open plaza that can hold up to 12,000 people for events.

All cars will go to an underground parking facility so that the campus remains open for bikes and pedestrians.

Microsoft says that the new campus will be more open and less formal.

Microsoft says the investment will involve approximately 2,500 construction jobs and will benefit the overall Puget Sound community, which includes the Washington cities of Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, and Everett.

Once complete, the campus will have 131 buildings, compared with today's 125 buildings, and will offer workspace for the 47,000 employees who now work there, plus room for an additional 8,000 people. 12 buildings will be torn down and replaced with 18 new ones, bringing the campus to a total of 131 buildings.

The updated campus will house 47,000 Microsoft employees that now work at the company's headquarters in Redmond, and allow for 8,000 more people.

Our new buildings will focus on inclusive design and accessible technology to empower all of our employees.

It is clear that Nadella is looking to revive the work culture at Microsoft, making it a little more collaborative with employees coming out of the closed-door offices and working in a more interactive environment.

Microsoft's project is somewhat more traditional in comparison.

Microsoft announced the development to employees Tuesday evening. There are also plans for a local light rail to take workers to and from locations around the campus. "As Microsoft continues to create the tools and services that are shaping the future of work, we can't think of a better time to modernize our campus into a model of ingenuity and innovation", explained Smith.
