Black Friday Sets Gun Background Check Request Record

Ronnie Noble checks out a firearm on sale in Gainesville Fla. Friday Nov. 24 2017

According to CNN, firearms dealers were hoping that rebates and deep discounts would bring in customers on Black Friday and boost recently flagging sales.

The jump is also significant considering that gun sales have slowed dramatically during the first year of Donald Trump's presidency, when compared to previous years.

Sweaters, TVs and slippers have always been hot items on Black Friday.

On Black Friday this year, American shoppers apparently bought record numbers of a perennial favorite: guns.

Nationally, the Federal Bureau of Investigations received more than 200,000 background checks on Friday - another record-breaker. Purchasers only have to undergo one check during a transaction and can therefore buy multiple firearms at once so there may have been more than 203,000 guns sold on Friday.

USA Today reports that the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) received 203,086 requests for background checks, a significant increase from the previous single-day record of 185,713 requests-set a year ago on Black Friday.

In the aftermath of recent mass shootings, lawmakers across states and in Washington have introduce new legislation that would limit the sale of certain firearms or accessories.

Friday's surge in background check requests came two days after Attorney General Jeff Sessions directed the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to do a comprehensive review of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

He directly pointed to the Sutherland Springs church shooting - and the Air Force's failure to report the suspected gunman's prior court-martial - as cause for concern.
