Florida targeting Dan Mullen

Florida expected to hire Dan Mullen

Given the volatility of the college football coaching carousel, the Gators landing Mullen would be a solid choice when you consider his reputation for developing quarterbacks - something Florida's woeful offense desperately needs - and the fact he made a bottom-feeder SEC program fairly relevant.

The Florida Gators are reportedly targeting former offensive coordinator and current Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen to fill their head coaching vacancy, according to Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel. Since being hired by the Bulldogs in 2009, Mullen has worked out to a 69-46 record (33-39 in conference).

Mullen's financial package was set at $4.5 million this season. South Carolian went 2-1 against Mullin's teams, winning in 2011 and 2013, but dropping Will Muschamp's second game in Starkville last season. Mississippi State will play in a bowl game for the eighth straight season.

Florida touched base with Mullen on Friday, following the Egg Bowl loss to Ole Miss.

No doubt, Florida fans will have a mixed reaction if Mullen ends up being the successor to Jim McElwain.

Mullen is now the second-longest tenured head coach in the Southeastern Conference and has produced more bowl game victories (five) and bowl appearances (seven straight) than any coach in school history.

Mullen's return to Florida reunites him with former MSU athletic director Scott Stricklin, who now serves in the same capacity with the Gators. The unbeaten season comes just two seasons after the Knights went winless.
