Las Vegas Valley hits 80, a record high, as Thanksgiving looms

Thanksgiving heat wave roasts Southern California | The Fresno Bee

Temperatures are expected to begin falling on Friday, when highs will be 10 degrees lower than Wednesday in several areas, but still above the norm.

The forecast 78-degree high for Thanksgiving also would beat the previous record of 76 degrees, set in 1995.

The National Weather Service said the heat was spawned by upper-level high pressure off the coast of northern Baja California with a ridge extending into southwestern California.

An all-time November high had been recorded Wednesday in Camarillo, where temperatures reached 99 degrees.

Sunshine will warm our afternoon temperatures into the mid-60s, but with light and variable winds, it will feel significantly warmer than it did for our Thanksgiving afternoon. Forecasters predicted temperatures in the high 80s and mid-90s throughout the Los Angeles area.

As for Thanksgiving Day itself, the west San Fernando Valley will probably be the hottest area in the L.A. region, Sirard said.

If Thursday's high in downtown Los Angeles reaches 90, as forecast, it would tie a record set on November 23, 1903, Thompson said.

After a frosty start, Acadiana will get to enjoy another sunny and seasonably cool day, but afternoon temperatures will be milder as compared with Thanksgiving. The normal average high for this time of the year is 72 degrees.

In Orange County, a high of 81 is expected in Newport Beach, which would tie a record set in 2002, while the expected high of 91 in Santa Ana could tie a record set in 1950, NWS meteorologist Greg Martin said.

But by the weekend the warm temperatures will ease and rain returns.
