Lebanon's Hariri leaves Cairo for Lebanon - Egypt airport sources

Saad al Hariri announced his resignation as Lebanese prime minister while in Saudi Arabia

Hariri's arrival in Cairo coincided with the arrival of the Egyptian president from a two-day visit to Cyprus where he attended a tripartite summit with Greece.

He will then meet with President Michel Aoun, who has said he would not accept Hariri's resignation until he received it in person.

"What the Egyptians and French need to do is to convince Mohammed bin Salman" to spare Lebanon a political crisis, he said, alluding to widespread suspicions that the Saudi crown prince, King Salman's son, was behind Hariri's resignation as part of the kingdom's conflict with Shiite and non-Arab Iran. He has said he will return to Lebanon by Wednesday for the country's Independence Day celebrations, where he said he will clarify his position. Saudi Arabia and Hariri say his movements are not restricted.

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has returned to Beirut more than two weeks after announcing while in Saudi Arabia that he had resigned his post.

The Saudi-owned, pan-Arab daily Asharq Al-Awsat alluded to French and Egyptian efforts in a front-page report on Tuesday. He plans to discuss threats against Israel from Iran and its Lebanese proxy terror group, Hezbollah.

Lebanon's outgoing Prime Minister Sa'ad Hariri met Saturday with Macron in Paris after fleeing to Riyadh earlier in the month due to what he said was an assassination attempt on his life.

Paris has intensified its rhetoric over Iran's regional activities.

On Saturday, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Iran's supreme leader, said Macron should stay out of its affairs.
