Pentagon releases sexual assault data by base, adds caution

Fort Drum releases U.S. Military sexual assault reports

The new numbers from the fiscal year 2016 show the number of sex assault reports has almost tripled at Fort Carson since 2013.

In 2013 at Fort Bragg, a total of 89 reports were received.

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base had the fewest total reports of the North Carolina installations.

The figures released on Friday come after a separate report earlier this year which highlighted how there had been a steady increase of sexual assault reports over the past several years.

The document, however, notes that the alleged assault may not necessarily have occurred where the report was made.

The number represents 20 percent of all of the Navy's sexual assault reports, according to the report.

The overall numbers released Friday reflect previous reports by SAPRO. On May 1 of this year, Navy Rear Adm. Ann M. Burkhardt, Galbreath's boss, unveiled the Pentagon's Annual Report on Sexual Assault in the Military for fiscal 2016.

The number of people who reported sexual assaults at military installations in Maryland increased 75 percent from 2013 to past year, the Pentagon said Friday.

In 2012, the military "reinvigorated" its approach to addressing sexual assault and encouraged better reporting, according to de Vera.

To report an incident as a restricted report means to report without referral for criminal investigation or to commanders.

There's also a recorded increase at the U.S. Air Force Academy. To report restricted allows the victim to seek medical services and advocacy with confidentiality.

For fiscal year 2016, 270 such cases occurred at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, while a total of 211 occurred at a combined group of USA facilities in South Korea, the data show.

"One of the features of the department's reporting program is that service members can report allegations of sexual assault at any time and at any place", Nate Galbreath, deputy director of the SAPRO, said.

The Department of Defense uses the term "sexual assault" to refer to adult sex crimes punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, including rape, sexual assault, forcible sodomy, aggravated and abusive sexual contact and attempts to commit those offenses. In joint bases, the number of reports decreased slightly from 705 in 2015 to 670 in 2017. The Army base in Anne Arundel County, the state's largest workplace, saw reports rise from 24 in 2013 to 47 past year - an increase of 95 percent. A report could involve allegations for an incident that occurred while on deployment, while away on leave, or even prior to entering the military.
