How effective is the "Great American Smokeout" in helping people quit smoking?

The Great American Smokeout challenges smokers to take the first step by quitting for the day or making a plan to quit for good. That's why the Cancer Society holds its the annual Great American Smoke Out.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, almost 160,000 people die each year from lung cancer caused by smoking.

The cardiopulmonary staff at Pioneers is available to help you quit smoking, now.

Don't smoke? You can still participate in The Great American Smokeout by encouraging your loved ones to kick the habit.

Health officials say about 18 percent of adults in New Hampshire smoke cigarettes.

If you need help quitting or anyone you know would like to quit, you can call the "Indiana Tobacco Quite Line" at 1-800-784-QUIT-NOW or 1-800-784-8663; you can also call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to quitting tobacco.

The Marquette County Health Department is providing people looking to quit with quit kits, created to help people make a plan to quit smoking. "It's important for us to make sure that our patients and people that are visiting our hospital aren't subjected to some of those issues that come along with second-hand smoke".
