Supreme Court rejects Samsung's appeal in Apple patent infringement case

US Supreme Court denied Samsung's appeal against Apple. CNET

The retrial between Apple and Samsung is set to start in May 2018.

In 2014, a California court ordered Samsung to pay almost $120 million in damages for violating two of Apple's patents, including the iPhone's well-known slide-to-unlock feature.

A jury awarded Apple $120 million and Samsung $160,000 in May 2014 but the case has been bouncing through the appeals system for the past three years. Both these smartphone giants have been battling it out in courts over various patent and design claims.

What's All The Hoopla About?

Last month a USA district court judge ordered a retrial to ascertain the amount Samsung owes Apple for contravening three iPhone 3Gs patent. Adding up, Samsung also said, "The lower courts made it too easy for Apple to prove infringement of a patent covering quick- link technology for converting text- message data". In all, Apple had filed complaint for violation of 5 patents, but were awarded damages in three of them. In fact, the case is so old, Apple doesn't even use the "slide to unlock" functionality on its iPhones anymore. An appeals panel overturned that verdict, but the full appellate panel reinstated the award in October 2016 by a vote of 8-3. From there, Samsung appealed to the Supreme Court, which is where the case met its end today.

The company had noted that one of Apple's patents at issue in the case had been invalidated by courts "and yet today's decision allows Apple to unjustly profit from this patent, stunts innovation and places competition in the courtroom rather than the marketplace".

Apple has not responded or commented so far. The latter has directly mocked its rival in a new commercial that attacks the iPhone X. It begins by teasing iPhone users that they've been running out of space due to Apple's persistence in releasing a 16GB model. As it turns out, it was a futile attempt by Samsung and now, has no option to pay to Apple.
